CSS

Cascading Style Sheets provide the language used for describing the presentation aspects of an HTML document, i.e. the look and formatting.

 

  • Developed by World Wide Web Consortium
  • Initial release 17 December 1996
  • CSS2 released 12 May 1998
  • CSS2.1 released 7 June 2011
  • CSS3 ongoing work
    • Drafts published June 1999
    • Divided into several separate documents called “modules”
  • CSS4 refers to new ‘level 4’ modules

 

  • Allows same style sheet to be applied to many pages
  • Provides faster page loading due to less code (compared to old methods of individually styling html elements within the document)
  • Easier to maintain
  • Multiple Device Compatibility. Allows content to be optimized for multiple devices
